Single piece forging high grade Aerospace steel
Each disc is manufactured from a single piece, premium quality carbon steel forging. When the metal is forged it creates a directional grain flow that follows the contour of the disc which reduces the risk of cracks and catastrophic failure associated with the inferior welded design.

After machining, the discs are subjected to a proprietary heat treatment process that gives the discs their characteristic appearance. APS brakes are not only aesthetically pleasing but offer enhanced wear characteristics and have a high resistance to corrosion and longer life associated with the thermal cycling experienced in the aircraft braking environment.
The corrosion protection also makes the discs particularly suited for agricultural aircraft that are exposed to harsh chemicals as well as aircraft located in coastal areas and aircraft that are left outside on the ramp full time.

Our proprietary heat treatment has a two-fold purpose. Firstly, the heat treatment strengthens the steel by bonding the carbon, oxygen and nitrogen in the top layer of the metal. This is not a coating that can wear off. The steel itself is transformed.
Secondly, the heat treatment gives the steel its aesthetically pleasing black appearance and provides a surface with a high resistance to the corrosion and oxidation associated with the extreme thermal cycling experienced in aircraft braking systems.
